Making sure you can avoid getting lost is one of the most important aspects of hiking, backpacking, or camping, so make sure you follow these tips to ensure that you know where you are, and that you know how to get back to the place from which you started!
Stay on the trail: If you are going hiking or camping in a state park or a nature preserve, there are probably plenty of trails for you to choose from; you should always stick to these marked trails, even though you might sometimes hear adventure calling you! Even though this does not guarantee that you will be able to easily find your car when the time comes (after all, there are usually plenty of crisscrossed trails), this will at least help you make sure you do not get hopelessly lost! Pay attention to markers: Your eyes will probably be roaming quite a bit as you hike along the trails, taking in all the nature around you; as your eyes roam about, make sure that they are also paying attention – every once in a while – to unique landmarks that you can remember on your return trip as indicators that you are on the right path. Have a map and compass: If you are out in the wilderness – even with paths to choose from – you need to make sure you always have a compass and (if applicable) a map in your possession; you should be able to find your way to where you want to go as long as you have these two items with you!
